Challenges in protecting Ethiopia’s heritage

Despite their cultural and historical value, many heritage places face significant challenges.

Despite their cultural and historical value, many heritage places face significant challenges:

  • Weathering and environmental damage: Rain, erosion, moisture, and temperature changes can damage stonework, paintings, and traditional building materials.
  • Urban development: New construction and changes to historic streets or buildings can disrupt the character of older settlements.
  • Inadequate maintenance: Limited funding, specialist skills, and conservation resources can allow deterioration to continue.
  • Conflict and instability: Damage, displacement, restricted access, and interruptions to conservation work can threaten historic places and the communities who care for them.
  • Unsuitable restoration: Inappropriate materials or poorly planned repairs can compromise the authenticity and structural integrity of historic buildings.
  • Pressure from tourism: Unmanaged visitor numbers and commercial development can affect fragile monuments and living religious sites.

UNESCO’s documentation identifies conservation and management concerns at several Ethiopian heritage properties, including Aksum, Lalibela, and Harar. Sustainable protection requires long-term planning, appropriate technical expertise, and meaningful involvement by local communities.
