For many Ethiopian communities, land is more than a resource for producing food. It can be a source of identity, spiritual meaning, shared responsibility, and continuity between generations.

Traditional environmental knowledge includes identifying useful plants, recognizing changes in weather, protecting water sources, conserving forests, and managing grazing areas.

One remarkable example is the Gedeo Cultural Landscape. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023, it demonstrates how generations of Gedeo farmers developed a layered agroforestry system. Tall trees provide shade and shelter for enset, coffee, and other crops, while customary institutions help regulate relationships with land and nature. Sacred forests have also helped preserve indigenous trees and medicinal plants.

Other important practices include:

  • Terrace construction: Communities in steep landscapes build and maintain terraces to reduce soil erosion and retain productive land.
  • Community-based conservation: Customary rules may regulate tree cutting, grazing, water use, and access to sacred or communal places.
  • Pastoral knowledge: Pastoralists in Ethiopia's lowlands use knowledge of seasonal water availability, pasture conditions, animal health, and livestock movement to manage herds.
  • Biodiversity stewardship: Knowledge of local plants, wild foods, useful trees, and medicinal species helps communities understand and use their environments.

Influence today: These approaches can inform climate adaptation, watershed restoration, biodiversity conservation, sustainable land management, and community-led environmental planning. Their effectiveness depends on local conditions and the continued participation of the communities who maintain them.
